I’m a holiday girl. Always have been. I love the lead up to any holiday, the craft projects, the invitations, the menu planning, filling up freezers. I love that sense of anticipation. I love a great Jewish holiday because all I really ever want is to be sitting around a table with great food, great people, and great conversation.
Rosh HaShana is one of my favorites because it gives us the chance to pause and reflect — not just individually, but as a family. What moments defined the past year? What did we learn, laugh about, struggle with, celebrate? And then comes my favorite part: dreaming forward. What do we want to bring into the new year? What hopes and sweet wishes are waiting for us just around the corner?
Now, reflection is beautiful… but it can also feel a little heavy at the table. So I decided to add a playful twist. I turned it into a game. Somehow, when you shuffle up a deck of questions, the conversation feels lighter. There’s laughter mixed with contemplation, and suddenly the table is buzzing with voices and stories.
That’s how my Rosh HaShana Family Conversation Starter Game came to be. It’s filled with cards that range from serious (Who inspired you this year?) to silly (What emoji did you use the most this year?). Some questions spark memories, others spark giggles — but all of them spark connection.
