One of my favorite parts of Sukkot is that our sukkah walls become a kind of gallery. Over the years, we’ve hung our kids’ art projects, (one year Yael built out a full timeline of Jewish history!) and pieces of artwork from our friends. I love the opportunity to bring our friends into our sukkah — not only as visitors around our table, but also as artists whose creativity decorates the space. There’s something deeply beautiful about being surrounded by the imagination and love of people who matter most.
This year, I’m especially excited about my friend Micol’s sukkah banners. They celebrate the shivaat haminim — wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates — the seven species of the Land of Israel. These banners are not only gorgeous, but they’re also a perfect reminder of the agricultural roots of the holiday. They make the sukkah feel full of blessing, abundance, and connection to the land — and to the people we love.
